Sikkim Government College, Namchi, in coordination with the Bioinformatics Centre, Biotechnology Division, Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, successfully organised a two-day Interactive Programme on "Bioinformatics and Its Role in Biological Sciences" under the banner of the Bioinformatics Education Programme (BEP) 2026. The programme was held on 28th and 29th July 2026 with the theme "Biology and Innovation" for the Honours students of the Departments of Botany and Zoology.
Main objective of the program was to introduce students to the field of computational biology.
The resource person for the Interactive Programme was Dr. Laydong Lepcha, Assistant Scientific officer, Bioinformatics Centre, Biotechnology Division, Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology.
The session included the following events
1). Introduction of bio-informatics
2). Bioinformatics in Genomics and Proteomics studies
3). Sikkim Bioinformatics Centre: Activities and Role and
4). Hands-on practices on applications of Bioinformatics softwares through laptop/computer.
The programme was mainly focused on creating an awareness among students about Bioinformatics, its pivotal role in genomic and proteomic research by facilitating the analysis of biological sequences, molecular structures and functional data, its application in discovery of novel genes, proteins, and therapeutic drug targets, and its significant contribution to advancements in agriculture, horticulture, medicine, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences, latest computational tools and innovations that are shaping latest biological research.
